Frequently Asked Questions:
Q. How do I become eligible to sit for the Oregon Contractor License test?
A. You may complete either a Home Study Course or Live Class training on Zoom. With either program, you must log at least 16 hours of study time.
Q. Should I complete the Home Study or Live Class training?
A. The home study course is self-study, at your own pace. The Live Class Zoom training is a 2-day class, 8 AM – 5 PM each day. Usually, within a few minutes of completing either course, you can schedule the test. Home Study is best suited for independent learners. Live Class works great for those who learn better in a “classroom” environment and want to complete rapidly.
Q. Where can I see the class schedule?
A. The class schedule is available here.
Q. How much does the Home Study and Live Class cost?
A. I have two different home study courses available. The Silver Course is $149 with shipping and the Gold Course is $189 with shipping and either include the manual. The Live Class Training is $350 and it includes the manual.
Q. What is the pre-highlighted book and when is it a good idea?
A. The pre-highlighted book is a convenience. If you attend the live Zoom class, we highlight in class, so it’s not necessary. It may be a good idea for home study courses if you don’t know what to highlight. Taking the practice tests will give you a good idea of important things to highlight in your book.
Q, What if I have the manual?
A. If you have the current manual, which is the 2nd Edition Oregon NASCLA manual, the Silver Course is $89 and the Gold Course is $129. If you’d like to attend the Zoom class and have the manual, the cost is $300.
Q. What’s included in the home study course?
A. The Silver Course includes:
· Manual
· Pre-Printed Tabs
· Online videos
· 3 – 80 question practice tests
· Sample Chapter Practice Tests
· Full Support, 9 AM – 9 PM
The Gold Course includes:
· Manual
· Pre-Printed Tabs
· Online videos
· 6 – 80 question practice tests
· Sample Chapter Practice Tests
· Online Virtual Flashcards (nearly 1,000)
· Full Support, 9 AM – 9 PM
Q. What’s your refund policy?
A. You can see the refund policy here.
Q. How do I take the test?
A. PSI Exams administers the test and you can take it either remotely or at one of their testing centers. You can see testing instructions here.
Q. How long do I have to wait to schedule the test?
A. You must complete the course before scheduling the test. You are usually able to take the test in a few days to a week or so. It depends on how busy PSI is at the time you schedule.
Q. Which is the better way to take the test, online or visit the testing center?
A. It depends, mostly on you! It’s easier to go to a testing center. If you have average or better computer skills and understanding and a good internet connection, online typically works well for most.
Q. What is a reasonable timeline to get my license?
A. If you complete training and testing this month, turn in your application by the end of the month, give the CCB 3-4 weeks to process your application, the timeline is 6-8 weeks. This assumes the application and the attachments are all in order and correct. It should take no longer than 6-10 weeks total if done correctly.
Q. How much does it cost to get a contractor license in Oregon?
A. The cost of the training is between $149 - $350. The test is $60. The cost of licensing is $400 for a two-year license. It costs $100 do form an LLC or Corporation in Oregon ($275 for foreign), bond is typically $200 - $300, and insurance depends on what work you’re performing. Check with your insurance agent and Workers’ Compensation insurer for rates.
Q. What’s your passing rate for students who take your class?
A. That information is no longer tracked. I’ve trained well over 5,000 contractors and most of them passed the first time. If you want to learn the material you'll be tested on, take my class!
